Not all passwords are acceptable. In particular, PIFSC follows the guidelines in the Department of Commerce Policy on Password Management. That document may be consulted for detailed requirements and background, but briefly, passwords must:

1. contain at least eight non-blank characters
2. contain at least one alphabetic (English) letter (case is ignored)
3. contain a character from at least one of the following classes:
   • digits
   • non-alphanumeric characters, e.g. '!', '$', '_' (Note: '@' is not allowed.)
4. contain at least six characters which do not repeat within the password
