Q.: How can I check for errors or missing data?
A.: There are several ways to check your data before you are 'debriefed': 1) Use the following tabs: Tab Name Location What it does Trip Summary Trip screen Gives a summary of catch info Print Sets Set/Haul screen Set/haul summary Print Gear Gear screen Gear summary You can also use the 'Order Catch By' item on the Catch screen to see a count of records by species (go to the end of the list) or you may order the Catch records in various ways for viewing or checking. 2) Periodically, use the Trip Validation tab (on the Trip screen) to run the validation checking program against your trip. The results will indicate possible errors and warnings in your data. You can print out this list and use it to check through your data. Please Note: Warnings and errors DO NOT necessarily mean that data should be changed. The warnings are strictly indicators of possible outlyers in the data.

Q.: What should I do if the data entry screen appears to have gotten hung up?
A.: You can try the following steps in order: 1) First, try to remember and write down what action(s) you were performing (this will help us immensely in diagnosing these types of problems) 2) Check the Status bar for error messages. 3) Try to gracefully ?back out? of the action you are trying to perform; retry the action 4) Try to delete the record you are entering (at most you will lose this one record) If none of the above steps are possible, you may have to exit the program: 5) If possible, return to the Trips screen and Exit (Exit button or Action/Exit on the menu) 6) Press Ctrl-Alt-Del (altogether) ONCE; wait for the Task Manager to appear; end the Oracle Forms task. If this is successful, you should also exit the browser (Internet Explorer) before re-entering the data entry application (LODS). 7) As a last resort, reboot the computer and then re-enter LODS.

Q.: How often should I press Save?
A.: You can press Save at any time. However, an automatic save is issued every time you change to a new screen or move to a new record. For example, when you leave the Trips screen to go to Sets, an automatic save is issued. When entering Catch records, an automatic save occurs when you go to a new line (new record). The result is that you will never lose more than one record of data if a power outage or other type of disconnection should occur.

Q.: On the PSI screen, when do I put in association info (assoc form, assoc page, assoc line)?
A.: There are, in general, two instances when you will fill out association info on a PSI line: A: 1) An event type of X (end of event) should always have association info. Fill in the page and line of the original event in the association columns of the `X? line. Example: Pg Ln Ev EvType Grp EventDate? Spc Beh? Assoc Form Pg Ln 1 1 1 B A 12-AUG-2003 dNG 1 2 1 X PS 1 1 2) If a different behavior occurs and you start a line related to an existing line, put the association info on this second line to associate it with the original line. Example: Pg Ln Ev EvType Grp EventDate? Spc Beh? Assoc Form Pg Ln 3 1 1 B A 12-AUG-2003 10:42 dNG 03 3 2 1 12-AUG-2003 10:45 01 PS 3 1 You may put in association info any time you think it helps clarify the observation.
